Every penny counts

How does Hawaii pay for public services?
Hawaii receives federal funding for education, elderly services, emergency services, health care, infrastructure, job training, and transportation, (just to name a few). The amount provided to us is determined by the size of our population.

How does the federal government determine how many people in Hawaii need certain services?
The U.S. Census Bureau takes a head count every 10 years. The results help determine how much federal funding each state will receive until the next census. (All information and answers provided to the Census Bureau are strictly confidential.) It is estimated that Hawaii will lose $1,200/year for every person who is not counted in the 2010 Census.

What can I do to ensure Hawaii gets its fair share?
You should have received a short census survey in the the mail. Complete the survey honestly & accurately, mail it back right away, and tell your family, friends, and colleagues to do the same.

It's all about attitude

"The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, the education, the money, than circumstances, than failure, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill. It will make or break a company... a church... a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past. We cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it. And so it is with you... we are in charge of our Attitudes."

Life is what you make of it

I've been listening to my iPod a lot lately, trying to get through the 12,000+ songs I have. Some of them get skipped right away and I make a mental note to delete them from my computer when I get home. Many songs get played through without getting gonged because they're not impressionable enough for me to notice that I don't really like them. "This Is Your Life" by Switchfoot would've been one of those songs if I hadn't heard Jon Foreman ask, "Are you who you want to be?"

Yesterday is a wrinkle on your forehead
Yesterday is a promise that you've broken
Don't close your eyes
This is your life
Today is all you've got now
Today is all you'll ever have
Don't close your eyes
This is your life
Are you who you want to be?
This is your life
Is it everything you dreamed that it would be?

Be the change you want to see in Hawaii

From encouraging green habits to perpetuating the Aloha spirit, Kanu Hawaii challenges us all to commit to making Hawaii a better place. I believe one person can make a difference because attitudes are contagious. It's up to you to decide what kind of influence you want to be.
